What tools can help us learn about the weather? 1B(K-2)#2: Tools such as thermometers, magnifiers, rulers, or balances often give more information about things than can be obtained by just observing things without their help. Class discussion about thermometers and Thermometers in Our World (See Procedure Steps 1 & 2 on page 52 in Teacher's Guide.)
  • Do students know that thermometers are tools used to measure temperature?
  • Do students mention various types of thermometers during the class discussion?
  12B(K-2)#1: Use whole numbers and simple, everyday fractions in ordering, counting, identifying, measuring, and describing things and experiences. Recording the Temperature: Record Sheet 5A (See Final Activities on page 54 in Teacher's Guide.)
  • Do students' recorded temperatures demonstrate an understanding of how to read a thermometer? (Is it to the nearest 2 and/or 10 degree mark?)
  • Can students explain how numerical temperature readings indicate how hot or cold it is?
  • Do students' drawings of clothing indicate an understanding of the temperature recorded?
