What is magnetism?

Activity is a "hook" to the following benchmark.

4G(3-5)#2: Without touching them, a magnet pulls on all things made of iron and either pushes or pulls on other magnets.

Class chart of observations/questions of paper clip apparatus (See Steps 1, 3, & 6 on pages 14-16 in Delta Teacher's Manual.)

  • Do students' guesses about the paper clip apparatus include a magnet?
  • Do students' questions and experimentation relate to magnetism? (Ex: Do students suggest testing other objects they believe would confirm a magnet is hidden in the apparatus? Students' questions and experiments should provide information about students' knowledge of magnets. For example, if they test other metal objects that are not held up like the paper clip and thus conclude it's not a magnet, the teacher has clear information that some/all students believe all metal objects are attracted to a magnet.)

2. Bolded sections indicate portion of benchmark addressed
3. Unless noted as a Summative Assessment, the assessments are formative and should be used to guide teaching and learning.
