12D(K-2)#2: Draw pictures that correctly portray at least some features of the thing being described.

Activity Sheet 4, Parts A & B

  • Do students' drawings clearly include magnets?
  • Do they accurately show the iron filings patterns? (See page 36 in Teacher's Manual for sample of a quality drawing.)

4G(3-5)#2: Without touching them, a magnet pulls on all things made of iron and either pushes or pulls on other magnets.

11C(3-5)#1: Some features of things may stay the same even when other features change. Some patterns look the same when they are shifted over, or turned, or reflected, or seen form different directions.

Have students compare and discuss their drawings. (See Steps 8 & 9 on pages 38-39 in the Delta Teacher's Manual.)

Class discussion about the connection between Activity 4 and 5 (See Step 9 on page 39 in Teacher's Manual.)

  • Do students recognize that the pattern of the iron fillings remains the same, regardless of the number or position of the magnets?
  • Do students make the connection between Activity 4 & 5 that the concentration of filings is greater at the ends of the magnet and the ends picked up more paper clips?
