What is a general rule about what things stick to a magnet? 4G(3-5)#2: Without touching them, a magnet pulls on all things made of iron and either pushes or pulls on other magnets. Class discussion of lab and Questions 1 & 2 on teacher-generated sheet
(See page 21, Step 4 in Delta Teacher's Manual and Teacher Tips. Teacher-generated sheet is available under "Teacher Resources" on the electronic curriculum.)
At the conclusion of the lesson:
  • Do students know that nonmetallic objects are not attracted to the magnet?
  • Do students know that some metallic objects are not attracted to the magnet?
12A(3-5)#1: Keep records of their investigations and observations and not change the records later. Class discussion about predicting (See Teacher Tips.)

Observe students conducting experiments and look for changes made to predictions during or after the experiment is completed.

  • Are students consistently and accurately recording their observations/data?
  • Are students aware that they are not to change their predictions after experimentation?
